UNLV guard Bryce Dejean-Jones complains to coach Dave Rice that he was fouled by San Diego State on a previous play during their Mountain West Conference semifinal game Friday, March 14, 2014, at the Thomas & Mack Center. The Aztecs won 59-51 to advance to the finals.

Bryce Dejean-Jones loves basketball. It’s all he thinks about. It’s what drives and sustains him.

His experience playing it in college, though, has been a struggle. From fights with teammates to butting heads with coaches to spending a few hours in jail, Dejean-Jones’ career could be defined largely by what’s happened off the court, not on it.

“I had my opportunity in college to kind of be selfish and play my way,” Dejean-Jones said. “Now I’m just looking to play for my team.”

It’s a mindset Dejean-Jones needed to flip, and it didn’t really take hold until his final days with UNLV. A teammate making you fear for your life can be quite a motivator for change.

“The guy walks in, he’s just yelling at me, saying all these things about me,” he recalled, “and then just tells me, ‘I should have shot you when I had the chance.’”
