Vegas Play of the Day: San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres

Tue, Jul 21, 2015 (12:15 p.m.)

We've reset the Play of the Day with fresh bankrolls and turned it into a yearly competition. Our three sports writers have restarted with $10,000 bankrolls to continue using on odds from the South Point.

San Diego Padres plus-120 vs. San Francisco Giants: $300 to win $360

The Padres are either going all out for the playoffs or selling at the trade deadline depending on what happens over the next few days. With only a 6 percent chance of reaching the latter goal per FanGraphs’ playoff odds, they have no margin of error in series against fellow contenders.

They must extend a five-game winning streak tonight, which they’re in a position to accomplish. No one is going to mistake starter Odrisamer Despaigne for a prime Trevor Hoffman, but he’s mowed down the Giants as efficiently as San Diego’s most famous pitcher in his prime.

Despaigne has never lost to the Giants and holds an ERA of below 1 in five appearances. Giants starter Chris Heston is the better pitcher, but the rookie is not yet an Ace that deserves to be a decent-sized road favorite against a division rival with a clicking offense.

But that’s what this line is saying. San Diego General Manger A.J. Preller might need to hold off the trade talks for one more day.

Current Standings: (as of July 1): Brewer (5-2, $11,300), Bern (2-3, $9,740), Keefer (1-6, $6,930)

Lifetime Records: 2014-15 champion Bern (87-77-1), Keefer (85-91-2), Brewer (76-91-2)
