Vegas Play of the Day: Marlins at Padres

Sun, Jul 26, 2015 (7:18 a.m.)

We've reset the Play of the Day with fresh bankrolls and turned it into a yearly competition. Our three sports writers have re-started with $10,000 bankrolls to continue using on odds from the South Point.

Miami Marlins at San Diego Padres, Total Over 7 at minus-105: $400 to win $420:: Miami starter Mat Latos enters with a 4.48 earned run average. San Diego starter Odrisamer Despaigne isn’t much better with a 4.98 earned run average, including surrendering six runs in five innings in his last appearance. With any other two teams, those earned run averages would call for placing a large wager on the over.

But the total is just seven runs for two reasons. First, games at San Diego's spacious Petco Park typically stay under the total. It’s just impossible to score there. Second, Miami has struggled to score all season, ranking 25th out of 32 major league teams in runs. San Diego isn’t much bettor at No. 21. And, Miami’s best players — all-stars Dee Gordon and Giancarlo Stanton — are on the disabled list.

I’m willing to throws those numbers out the window. These two pitchers are awful. They’ll get hit early and often.
