Vegas Play of the Day: Phillies at Mets

Tue, Sep 1, 2015 (12:08 p.m.)

We've reset the Play of the Day with fresh bankrolls and turned it into a yearly competition. Our three sports writers have re-started with $10,000 bankrolls to continue using on odds from the South Point.

New York Mets minus-180 vs. Philadelphia Phillies: $900 to win $500: The final month of the baseball regular season is a risky time for handicappers. The lines are frequently inflated with one set of teams jockeying for position in the playoff race and another set of teams auditioning younger players for future seasons. So, tonight, the first-place Mets are a heavy favorite with their No. 5 starter, Jonathon Niese, against a Phillies squad playing out the schedule.

While it appears risky playing the Mets at minus-180, it’s worth the gamble. I’m willing to lay a little extra to bet against a bad team and bad pitcher. Philly starter Aaron Harang has the worst record in the big leagues at 5-14, and his earned run average is a comical 4.79.

My $900 wager is nearly 10-percent of my bankroll, which is a formula for disaster. But they Phillies are just so bad. The Mets won’t slip-up in their hunt for the division title, and I’ll have some extra funds to bet college football this weekend.

Current Standings: (as of July 1): Brewer (11-9, $10,440), Bern (6-9, $9,305), Keefer (7-14, $6,261)

Lifetime Records: 2014-15 champion Bern (89-83-1), Keefer (91-97-2), Brewer (81-96-2)
