We've reset the Play of the Day with fresh bankrolls and turned it into a yearly competition. Our three sports writers have re-started with $10,000 bankrolls to continue using on odds from the South Point.

Detroit Tigers plus-105 vs. Oakland A’s: $300 to win $315: Justin Verlander is no longer a front-of-the-rotation starting pitcher for the Detroit Tigers. His 5.79 earned run average this season is enough evidence for handicappers to avoid playing Detroit when Verlander takes the mound. Just not against Oakland.

Verlander has given up eight earned runs over 10 starts during the past four-plus seasons against Oakland, posting a 1.04 ERA and 0.86 WHIP, and three times bringing a shutout into the eighth inning, according to Fox Sports.

My wager will be small on Detroit because Oakland is starting Sonny Gray, who is one of baseball’s best. Gray has recorded a quality start in each of his four starts of 2016, including striking out seven most recently against hot-hitting Toronto. Moreover, Oakland has won five of its past six games in Detroit and has an 8-3 road record.

Still, I’ll bet on Verlander at plus-money to continue his domination of Oakland. It’s a trend that’s too good to pass on.

Current Standings (as of July 1): Brewer (45-37-2, $11,690), Bern (30-37, $6,125), Keefer (43-54-2, $6,590)

Lifetime standings: 2014-15 Champion Bern (109-111-1), Brewer (114-124-4), Keefer (126-136-4)
