Vegas Play of the Day: Pirates at Padres

Sat, Jul 29, 2017 (2 a.m.)

We’re entering the fourth season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won back-to-back titles in the 2015-2016 and 2016-17 seasons, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015.

Pittsburgh Pirates minus-120 at San Diego Padres, $720 to win $600: While San Diego starter Dinelson Lamet has shown flashes of dominance this season — a 12 strikeout game, for instance — he still has a 5.92 earned run average, and the Padres have lost in two of his last three starts. He’s been inconsistent most of the season, either striking out batters with ease, or struggling to get out of the fifth inning.

Pittsburgh backers are getting a favorable number because Pirates starter Ivan Nova surrendered seven runs in five disappointing innings last weekend at Colorado. But Nova has 10 wins on the season and a 3.62 earned run average. He rarely issues walks.

Pittsburgh is still within striking distance of winning the National League Central. San Diego has a losing record and is auditioning younger players. I hate betting a road team on a Saturday night, but you can’t pass on such a favorable number with a team playing for something.

Current Standings: Granger (4-2, $12,557), Keefer (4-1, $11,095), Brewer (3-2, $10,500), Grimala (1-1, $10,010)
