Vegas Play of the Day: Brewers at Cardinals

Thu, May 4, 2017 (1:37 p.m.)

We’re entering the third season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won the 2015-2016 season, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015. Bern stepped away in the middle of the 2016-2017 season with a 16-12 record and $13,317 bankroll, with Mike Grimala taking his place.

Milwaukee Brewers plus-140 at. St. Louis Cardinals: $600 to win $840 : St. Louis is getting respect by oddsmakers because Adam Wainwright is starting and the Cardinals, typically one of the National League’s best teams, are at home. But Wainwright is a shell of his former greatness, entering with a 6.12 earned run average. And the Cardinals are on the decline with a record hovering around .500.

Milwaukee starter Chase Anderson has been solid through the first month of the season, posting a 2.10 earned run average and 24 strikeouts in 30 innings pitched. The Brewers were projected to be one of baseball’s worst teams, and they may wind up sputtering toward the end of the season, but are fourth in baseball in runs scored and third in slugging percentage.

At plus-140, it’s worth betting the Brewers. They can score and Wainwright is a good candidate to be hit hard.

Current Standings: Grimala (9-12, $9,193), Granger (15-19-1, $8,667), Keefer (42-37-3, $7,330), Brewer (29-30-1, $6,585)
