Sun editorial:

A Rush to judgment

Radio talk show host offers nothing positive to the political debate

Tue, Nov 3, 2009 (2:07 a.m.)

In a lengthy interview aired on “Fox News Sunday,” conservative bloviator Rush Limbaugh trashed President Barack Obama as an egotist taking the country down a road to ruin.

It was red meat for the viewers of Fox News, which carries the far right’s message. For the rest of us, it was an insight into the thinking of the man who has become the soul of the Republican Party, whose faithful listeners tune in to his radio show to get direction.

Limbaugh started in on the president by calling him “very narcissistic,” which is laughable, considering the legendary ego of the radio host who has for years proclaimed his “talent on loan from God.”

As Limbaugh riffed on the president and the country in dark, melodramatic tones, we wondered whether we were watching “The Colbert Report” or some other farce instead of a reputed news show.

You could imagine sinister tones from a pipe organ playing in the background. Limbaugh ominously said these are “dark days for our country” and accused Obama of carrying a “radical” agenda. Limbaugh claimed the White House is “destroying” the economy and the private sector, adding, “I have to think that it may be on purpose.”

He did not, nor was he asked to, expand on that absurd comment. Destroy the economy? Why not? That’s always a good political move, isn’t it?

Limbaugh also sounded the popular Republican refrain, accusing the White House of trying to peel back personal liberties and freedoms. Those charges have been tossed around too easily by conservatives such as Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. When they’re not claiming the president is a communist, they call him a fascist. To hear it from them, he could be both!

In one particularly telling point in the interview, Limbaugh was asked why people aren’t turning to the Republican Party. He noted a lack of leadership and a “muddied” message.

“What do they stand for?” he asked. “Right now it’s opposition to Obama.”

No wonder. As Rush goes, so go the Republicans.
