Regarding Stuart Weiss’ Thursday letter to the editor, headlined “We must consider exiting Afghanistan”:
If President Barack Obama sends more troops and support for our forces on the ground in Afghanistan, he faces the loss of confidence of his left-wing Democratic base. If he sends more troops and support he becomes, at best, a centrist president. At worst, he becomes a right-leaning, Democratic, single-term president.
So, for Obama, is it more important for him to get reelected in 2012? Is it more important and expedient for him to leave our sons and daughters in harm’s way — as political cannon fodder — while he searches for a way to further enhance his political legacy?
We have been through this before during the Vietnam War. I do not want to sacrifice any more of our sons or daughters in a war being waged by a dithering American president/commander-in-chief who doesn’t even possess the basic executive or military command skills of a junior military officer, a plan of action for the region, or the slightest inkling of what he wants to achieve in the area anyway.

"So, for Obama, is it more important for him to get reelected in 2012? Is it more important and expedient for him to leave our sons and daughters in harm's way -- as political cannon fodder -- while he searches for a way to further enhance his political legacy?"
When Obama walk away Obama will have to tell us how he will protect us.
Biden is saying conditions have changed since March when Obama put his strategy in place.
In March Obama sent thinly spread out unsupported troops expanding out into the Afghanistan wilderness settlements exposing them to local attacks. Unfortunately Obama also placed new restrictive rules of engagement on our troops and gave the enemy many civilian civil liberties. Now with the 2009 summer offense nearly over the military is saying they need more troops to fight under Obama's rules. The troops are not allowed to go after the enemy when they hide in buildings. In addition to previously giving terrorist the Miranda rights, hundreds of prisoners held by the U.S. military in Afghanistan will for the first time have the right to challenge their indefinite detention and call witnesses in their defense under a new review system.
What is not clear is why Obama is laying the blame on "failure" in Afghanistan on President Hamid Karzai and the Afghanistan central government.
Afghanistan never signed up for duty.
There was no strong central government in
Afghanistan when the USA went in to rout the Taliban, which harbored the Al-Qaida.
Afghanistan still does not want a strong central government.
Now Obama is demanding that Afghanistan develop an "adequate" government, an army, and a police force. Why should Afghanistan?
Obama needs to have a strategy to win without Hamid Karzai and a strong central government.

We should not be there for nation building, but just be in the shadows doing our thing with as few people as possible.
Bush understood this hence his containment strategy of using Spooks and Drones to attack whenever and wherever the Taliban and Al-Qaida popped up.
The people are against the Obama escalation for one of two reason, either they are anti-war or they cannot support more troops in Afghanistan if Obama is commander in chief.
John, where were you doing the Vietnam War? GWB, Cheney, Hastert, Lott, Frist, Tenet, Delay, Boehner, and McConnell, to a "MALE", they are all draftdodgers and commie-siders, who lacked any military leadership skills, yet they got us into Iraq-NAM. Americans wewre suck*red just like Hitler did to the Germans.
BrEaking NEWs! The Canadains just imprisoned a Rawandan because he killed 500K people. War crimes and crimes against humanity. Simultaneoulsy, Boy George was giving a paid speech in Canada. He mass-murdered 500K innocnet and unsuspecting Iraqis, all for Judeo-Christian crusade, oil pilfering, GOP grin and grip sessions, and war profiteering for Cheney, GE-NBC, Blackwater, and Halliburton. Cullers of colored folks.
In the past 72 hours, the Italians sentenced some of our CIA officers for torturing Arabs in Italy. My fellow Big-House Negroes. Obama, Holder, and Congressioal Black Congress-CBC-comical blacks in congress, they are all hiding under their desks, humming and singing stanzas from "We Shall Overcome", because they fear the "commie-sider" laced GOP. O'BUMBLER! Grow a PAIR!
Future is right about one thing. We don't need more troops in afghanistan. It is a war much more suited to being fought 'in the shadows'. As far as his coments about Obama, well that is simply ignorance.
Private Mandingo continues to point out the obvious to those of us who lived through the events. Iraq is a quagmire as is Afghanistan. We simply cannot and will not ever win against the insurgencies in those countries.
Those were not only wars that were clearly profiteering by the scum of the likes of Cheney (and his big oil buddies at BP who wanted the fields Saddam expropriated back in the 60's), but also managed the prosecution of those wars about as effectively as 'Brownie' handled Katrina.
Rumsfeld is the most imcompetent pos the military ever had to suffer through. He essentially destroyed any chance of a victory in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Both he and his scumbag pal Cheney need to be sent to the Hague for war crimes, war profiteering and generally being dumb as rock douche bags that got 4,000 plus American soldiers killed needlessly.
