A 31-year-old woman with no underlying medical conditions has died after catching the H1N1 flu, the Southern Nevada Health District reported today.
That brings to 12 the number of people in Clark County who have died of the H1N1 flu virus, also known as the swine flu.
Another person died in June of the H1N1 flu in a Las Vegas hospital, but the woman had been visiting from upstate New York, health officials said.
For the week ending Oct. 17, there have been 361 cases of laboratory confirmed H1N1 flu, the health district reported.
The health district has received both FluMist and injectable H1N1 flu vaccines.
Starting Wednesday, a FluMist Express line will be available at the health district's mobile command center at 625 Shadow Lane, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The express line will offer the inhaled 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine to people in the following priority groups: health care workers and emergency medical technicians with direct patient contact, children between the ages of 2 and 4 years old, caretakers and parents of children younger than 6 months old.
As of Saturday, the health district had received 49,000 doses of H1N1 influenza vaccine. By Monday the health district had administered 7,184 doses of the vaccine.
What about the person's overall health?
Was she a drug abuser, was she a smoker, was she an alcoholic? Was she afflicted by some other disease factor at some point in time and that affliction had not been documented so the SNHD could find it? This death has to have underlying causes, but does the SNHD have enough cash on hand to look into it fully?

I would concur with mred if it wasn't for the fact that he has an underlining condition known in simple terms as pathetic self importance, seemingly the desire to say something important and self serving but lacking the ability to formulate an original thought. Bill Maher is old enough to probably have residual immunity from the 1918 pandemic. If you are over 50 and have no contact with children or "at risk individuals", there is no recommendation to get the shot.
A real newspaper would be reporting on the significant number of children missing school due to "flu" symptoms.
Everyone just hold on. One death does not make an epidemic. From the article, 361 cases of N1H1 were reported during the week ending October 17. I presume this includes the 1 death. 1/361 = ~2.7 deaths per 1000 cases. This is in line with regular seasonal flu deaths ..... it's a very small number and not an epidemic.
Get the shot but don't get your shorts in a bunch.
People Just listen to your Doctor her or she will tell you if you need the shot or not. If you can not trust your Doctor then why have one.

I think something like 36,000 Americans die of flu each year. Excuse me if I'm a little skeptical about the reasons that this strain is being hyped.
The H1N1 influenza scare is all about more government intrusion and control.
The fear is that the H1N1 can mutate into a virus that is much more deadly. That is what occurred with the Spanish flu after WWI. In that year the spring flu was no more dangerous than past flus but by the fall it mutated and that is when all of the deaths occurred. So the health officials are simply planning for the worst-case secnario. So far, so good - the strain has remained a fairly typical flu.
HYPE OR NOT SAFE OR SORRY....we havent had a pandemic in 100 years and we are due trust me if you have 6 hours to listen to Glen beck you should be first becuase you are of no use to this planet....
H1N1 is about as lethal as the seasonal flu that comes round every year. Shots are good, as they're less risky than H1N1, but the real threat is if a highly contagious flu strain (like H1N1) combines with a highly lethal flu strain (like bird flu). If that happens, it'll be like 1919 or worse. And given how efficiently we're able to get the H1N1 vaccines out, I wouldn't hold out much hope for preventing a redux of 1919.
I am a H1N1 'survivor'.
Did a lot of research and talked to my Dr. at some length, as I was concerned with two young children at home, (one under six months). I was put on Tamiflu immediately and took simple precautions at home and (thankfully) neither of my children nor my wife was infected.
I think the biggest 'scare' from this pandemic is the MEDIA. No, I don't mean the Glen Beck or Rush media, I mean the 'so-called' news sources that pump the masses full of inaccurate information and sensationalizations of the truth.
Shame on the media and shame on those fools like Rocco, mred and their ilk; if you don't like Beck or Rush, do what I do, watch/listen to something else.
H1N1 can be deadly indeed, no more or less deadly than Influenza though. If you take the proper treatment and listen to your Dr., you'll be fine. I actually thought this 'flu' was quite mild compared to those I've had in the past.
