letter to the editor:

Simple way to raise money for education

Fri, Apr 10, 2015 (2 a.m.)

Our governor, representatives and our largest businesses have a problem with tax.

The casinos and motels have figured out a way to add revenue with a resort fee of anywhere from $20 to $30 per day, plus a tax on that, and nobody seems to flip out over that small revenue enhancement (tax). We still get a visitor count of 40 million.

The basic business here pays a business fee, and doubling that seems to create a major storm of protest.

About two years ago I made a suggestion to raise income for education, which still seems to be driving the need for more money. I restate my idea and will let any politician that needs name recognition hang their name on it.

Using rounded figures for simplicity, we have 200,000 rooms for rent; let’s assume a 90 percent occupancy and add $1 per day per room. If my simple math works, that is $180,000 per day. Can that formula using all the state’s rented rooms make enough nontax money to cover the shortfall in education funding?

The visitor is paying the resort gimmick, so $1 will not keep them away. This would most likely get through the minds in Carson City and even the Chamber of Commerce. It could be that this is too simple, but it could be worth a try. Gov. Brian Sandavol should give it a look.
