Kareo, a company that creates software for small medical practices, accepted state funding in a ceremony at its Summerlin office Thursday afternoon. Councilman Bob Beers presented the firm, which employs about 100 people in the Las Vegas Valley, with a $242,500 check from the state Catalyst Fund.

The $10 million fund, created in 2011, provides grants to companies looking to relocate or bring part of their business to the state. To receive the funding, a firm is required to have an endorsement from city officials, one that Beers was happy to provide at the ceremony. “This is a great, great company,” he said, noting that it provides competitive wages.

Although Kareo is headquartered in California, Kareo's second-largest office is its Summerlin location, where it operates its medical billing division. The office helps small medical practices outsource billing. Dan Rodrigues, the CEO and founder, said the company expects to hire 200 to 300 more employees in the Las Vegas area.

Kareo’s Summerlin office opened last year. In his remarks, Beers said the Catalyst Fund money will help the company offset costs associated with moving operations to the state, such as payroll taxes.

The health care software company currently serves over 30,000 medical providers across the country.
