Metro Police officer shoots, kills larceny suspect after chase

Sat, Aug 29, 2015 (12:18 p.m.)

Metro Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a man dead in North Las Vegas on Saturday morning.

According to Metro Police:

Officers responded to a larceny call at 3:17 a.m. in the 5000 block of East Craig Road. They investigated, and with the help of the alleged victim, they identified the suspect’s vehicle.

Officers stopped the car on East Cheyenne Avenue on the Interstate 15 overpass and arrested two occupants. A third occupant, who was carrying a gun, fled.

An officer chased that suspect into a desert area, and the suspect didn’t comply with a command to drop the gun. The officer tried to tase the suspect while chasing him, but the Taser was ineffective.

When the officer and suspect reached Losee Road and East Sharp Circle, the suspect turned toward the officer with the firearm in his hand, prompting the officer to shoot multiple rounds.

The suspect was taken into custody, and arriving officers performed first aid. The suspect was pronounced dead at UMC Trauma.

The incident was the ninth officer-involved shooting for Metro this year. The identity of the officer involved will be released within 48 hours of the incident.

The Clark County Coroner’s office will release the suspect’s identity and cause and manner of death.
