letters to the editor:

Just who are the oddballs? All of us

Remember the 1960s television program “Green Acres,” starring Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor? The star character, Mr. Douglas, gives up his law practice in New York and moves to a farm in the country. He is surrounded by nuttiness. All of his neighbors are kooky beyond belief.

Mr. Douglas’ patience is constantly tested. He appears to be the only sane person amid a town full of lunatics. However, he does not see his own eccentricity (he plows fields in a suit and tie), and he thinks he is the only sane person in the entire county.

Sound familiar? We complain when we find ourselves surrounded by idiots everywhere we go. However, we are not aware of our own eccentric tendencies. Other people view our habits and oddities with quiet amusement while we think they are the ones who are odd.

Through this we must retain our sense of humor and not lose the ability to laugh at ourselves. Isn’t this what this old television show really teaches us?
