Foothill High graduate Austin Starr will suit up at UNLV this season as a preferred walk-on, it was announced Monday.
Starr and his grassroots coach, Lamar Bigby, sent the news out on Twitter, and a UNLV source confirmed it. Even though Starr won’t be a scholarship player, NCAA rules prohibit coaches from commenting on incoming athletes.
Starr, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard with good outside range, graduated from Foothill in 2014 and then attended Impact Basketball Academy’s one-year prep program. Starr’s father, Keith, played 17 games in the NBA during the 1976-77 season and served as an assistant coach at UNLV from 1984-92.
More recently the elder Starr has served as an assistant at local high schools and also provided color commentary on some UNLV home games streamed online.
Austin Starr is currently the Rebels’ lone nonscholarship player. Barry Cheaney, who was the only player on all four of coach Dave Rice’s rosters, wanted to focus his attention on the final year of his five-year pre-med program before entering medical school next year. Charles Rushman completed his undergraduate work in three years and transferred for more playing time to Lindenwood University, a Division II program in St. Louis.
The Rebels still have one of their 13 scholarships remaining for the 2015-16 season. Rice can either use it by the time school starts Aug. 24 or hang on to it for a possible midyear transfer.
