Former UNLV offensive lineman Brett Boyko has got options, and for a guy who wasn’t selected in the NFL Draft, that’s a decent position to be in.
Boyko, who signed a free agent deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, was taken 14th overall Tuesday in the second round of the Canadian Football League Draft. The British Columbia Lions selected Boyko, who probably would have gone higher if he didn’t have that deal with the Eagles, and then in the third round the Lions selected another former Rebel, running back Shaquille Murray-Lawrence, with the 23rd overall pick.
Boyko could be a guard or a tackle, and ideally he hopes to make the Eagles’ roster. If that falls through, though, he could get his pro career started in the CFL. Boyko, who was a two-time second team All-Mountain West selection, is from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, while Murray-Lawrence is from Scarborough, Ontario.
Last season, Murray-Lawrence led the Rebels with 552 rushing yards and nine touchdowns despite missing multiple games because of a suspension and injuries. In two seasons the junior college transfer, who has the longest name in UNLV football history with 23 characters, made an immediate impact as the Rebels’ big-play threat.
The teammates were the fourth and fifth Rebels ever drafted by the CFL and the first since receiver Andrew Dubiellak in 2002.
