letters to the editor:

Obama does much worthy of defending

Mon, May 18, 2015 (2 a.m.)

When he was a presidential candidate, Barack Obama said he would bring our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan, and as president he did. He said he would bring about health care reform; he did. He said he would save the auto industry, and he did. He said he would bring down unemployment rates, which he has.

President Obama extended the Bush tax cuts for lower incomes; closed the doughnut hole in Medicare Part D; required insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions; funded the Veterans Administration so it has all the resources it needs; expanded homeless veteran housing vouchers; provided funds to help nonprofit organizations and police combat domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking; provided $30 billion in assistance to Israel over the next decade; extended monitoring of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty; opened negotiations with Iran over building nuclear weapons; and many more accomplishments.

What I do not like is the law signed by President Obama that will allow Wall Street to use taxpayers’ money for future bailouts. Nor do I like this Asian trade deal because I believe it will be another North American Free Trade Agreement outsourcing American jobs.

Because of his accomplishments, I will defend President Obama from racists and the sort of people who latch onto any conspiracy involving birth certificates, college records and marital records. It’s a shame that in this age of understanding we have mental zombies hanging onto old-world ideas that refuse to die.
