CARSON CITY — The Nevada Assembly has approved a measure that would include a multicultural component in the state's education standards.

Assembly members voted 39-1 on Thursday to approve AB 234. It now moves to the Senate.

The measure is sponsored by Democratic Assemblyman Harvey Munford and requires the state's education standards board to include a multicultural component in social studies curriculum. It also creates a requirement for perspective teachers to take a multicultural education class before obtaining a teacher's license.

The multicultural components would include lessons on the contributions from men and women of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. Munford has attempted to pass the measure several times and said it would help students better understand their heritage.

The bill would take effect on July 1.
