Nevada Supreme Court won’t revisit Las Vegas water pipeline

RENO — The Nevada Supreme Court is sticking to an earlier decision that at least temporarily blocks water interests in Las Vegas from pumping new supplies from the high desert near the Nevada-Utah line.

In brief orders Thursday, the high court refused to revisit the earlier pipeline ruling at the request of the Southern Nevada Water Authority and the Nevada state water engineer.

Chief Justice James Hardesty said his court doesn't have jurisdiction to overturn a 2013 ruling by White Pine County District Judge Robert Estes.

Estes concluded the engineer didn't have the authority to approve the plan to pump millions of gallons of groundwater a year from several valleys in eastern Nevada. He ordered the engineer to recalculate the amount of water that's available and establish standards to limit potential environmental damage before the project goes forward.
