CARSON CITY — Nevada senators have passed a bill aimed at attracting high-quality charter school operators to the state.
The Senate voted 11-8 on Tuesday to pass SB491, which creates the Charter Harbor Master program. A budget committee already approved $10 million over two years to fund the program, which was half what the governor requested.
The measure would provide state money to a nonprofit organization that would need to match the funding and recruit high-quality charter school management organizations to serve students in poverty.
Democratic opponents said they didn't think that the state should be invested in the success of the charter school industry and had concerns about allocating millions of dollars to private organizations.
Nevada state superintendent Dale Erquiaga compared the measure to state incentives meant to attract businesses to Nevada.
