letters to the editor:

Don’t let Buffett kill solar progress

Thu, May 28, 2015 (2 a.m.)

Regarding solar, Brian Greenspun said in the column “How about some power to the people?” (Las Vegas Sun, May 17), “I know the answer. It is money.” Are the Legislature and governor being overly influenced by billionaire Warren Buffett’s NV Energy? Nothing is being done in the Legislature or by the governor to free the rooftop solar industry from the 3 percent limit NV Energy has in place.

NV Energy doesn’t want any competition. Reporter Kyle Roerink wrote, “Senators dealt a crushing blow to the rooftop solar industry ... passing an amendment that would do little to address a cap limiting industry growth. At the same time, it would allow the Public Utilities Commission to levy three new fees on customers who want to generate carbon-free electricity” (“Lawmakers want new rooftop solar fees, don’t lift cap,” lasvegassun.com, May 16). Based on Roerink’s article, solar power bill savings of 20 percent may flow back to NV Energy. This is a direct attack on affordable rooftop solar leasing businesses. Message to the PUC: Crush the rooftop solar industry in Las Vegas and hammer folks who have or want solar roofs.

Buffett has tried this and failed in many other states. Now Buffett’s money is trying to keep Nevada from being the solar leader in the world. Is Buffett going to kill jobs in Nevada while the governor and legislators let him? It’s time others write/call their legislators to demand action. Shouldn’t Nevada homeowners have the right to install solar on their roofs without unwarranted fees, or do we succumb to Buffett’s billions?
