letters to the editor:

How can we keep teachers? It’s easy

Thu, Nov 19, 2015 (2 a.m.)

I just read your article about how our Legislature is putting together a huge task force to figure out how to ensure we have qualified teachers in every classroom.

The answer is simple and obvious to everyone who is on the task force, in the school district or willing to do even a slight amount of digging: pay them.

After the teachers negotiated their contract, their step increases and merit raises were frozen. Time and again, the Carson City School District takes care of most of its business before it sits down to negotiate with its unions, then cries inability to pay. Most teachers are earning several years behind their agreed-upon salaries. This year their health care system caved in and a large portion of teachers had their monthly contributions to purchase health care increase from $160 to $450.

Teachers are leaving the profession in droves just to protect themselves and provide for their families. Do the right thing.
