65-1 shot Stormy Lucy springs upset in Matriarch at Del Mar

DEL MAR, Calif. — Stormy Lucy rallied from far back to win the $300,000 Matriarch Stakes by a head at 65-1 odds Sunday on closing day of Del Mar's fall meet.

Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Stormy Lucy ran a mile on turf in 1:35.16 and paid $132.80, $50.40 and $21.20 as the longest shot in the field of older fillies and mares.

"She ran huge," Desormeaux said. "Terrific race for her. Never been involved in one in a stakes like this. Amazing."

Recepta returned $9.20 and $6.60, while 5-2 favorite Filimbi was another 1 1.2 lengths back in third in the Grade 1 race.

The victory was worth $180,000. It was Stormy Lucy's eighth win in 31 career starts. She is trained by Ed Moger Jr. and trained by his brother Steve.

"We've been trying to get a Grade 1 win for her all year. It's the first Grade I for me and I've been waiting for it for a long time," Moger Jr. said. "I've been training for 40 years."

In the $101,750 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes for 2-year-olds, Dressed in Hermes won by 1 1/4 lengths under Hall of Famer Mike Smith.

He ran a mile on turf in 1:36.13 and paid $9.40, $4.80 and $3.80 for trainer Janet Armstrong.

Collected returned $10.80 and $8.20, while Frank Conversation was another 1 1/2 lengths back in third and paid $7.60 to show.

The victory was worth $60,000. Dressed in Hermes has two wins in five starts.
