Nevada Assembly Majority Whip Jim Wheeler announced today that he is backing Ted Cruz for president after the candidate he previously supported dropped out of the race.

Wheeler is the second prominent Nevada leader to endorse a presidential candidate in two days after Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker backed out of the race two weeks ago. Former Nevada Gov. Bob List pledged his support to Marco Rubio on Sunday. Wheeler and List both previously served on Walker’s campaign in Nevada.

Wheeler said that Cruz is “willing to take on the tough fights for what is right” and defend the U.S. Constitution. Wheeler, who was elected to the Nevada Assembly in 2012, represents Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties.

"I am thrilled to have Jim join our team in Nevada,” Cruz said. “His record as a principled leader and strong, conservative fighter will be invaluable in our effort to win the Nevada caucuses.”

Wheeler joins other Nevada legislators in their endorsement of Cruz — including two former Walker supporters, Nevada Assemblyman Ira Hansen and Nevada Assemblywoman Victoria Dooling.
