51-, we mean 50-14

Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Ray Brewer and Case Keefer recap all of the week one football action, including Desert Pines' 50-14 victory over Arbor View. That's the correct score, even though Keefer repeatedly tries to give the Jaguars an extra point.

We’ve followed this rule in past seasons when doing the weekly high school football top 10: Defeats to a national opponent won’t change a team’s status in the rankings.

So, while Desert Pines deserves to move into the No. 2 spot after dismantling Arbor View in an impressive 50-14 victory, we won’t punish Liberty for its loss in Hawaii.

Rather, we’ll commend Liberty for challenging Hawaii power St. Louis, a respected opponent regionally.

The same could be said for Green Valley. The Gators surrendered 42 points in losing to a California opponent, but will still be ranked at No. 8 this week.

Here are the rest of the rankings:

1. Bishop Gorman (1-0): Not only is Gorman the top team locally, it’s also No. 1 nationally this week following a victory against Chandler of Arizona to open the season. Up next: Friday at Bingham (Utah)

2. Liberty (0-1): The Patriots’ will take another crack at making a splash nationally this week when they play Hawaii state champion Mililani High. Up next: Friday vs. Mililani

3. Desert Pines (1-0): Wouldn't it be fun to see the Desert Pines offense take on Bishop Gorman? The Jags are the talk of the town after their victory against Arbor View. Up next: Friday at Mojave

4. Centennial (1-0): Centennial, for all intents and purposes, was outplayed in its opener by Legacy. But the Bulldogs, like all good teams, found ways to win. Up next: Friday vs. Shadow Ridge

5. Palo Verde (1-0): Some would argue Palo Verde is too high in the rankings. But it overcame controversy to beat Coronado on the road last week and have a strong defense. They play another quality opponent this week. Up next: Friday vs. Basic

6. Arbor View (0-1): Arbor View might have been guilty of overlooking Desert Pines. Either way, the Aggies had no answers for DP’s speed. Up next: Friday vs. Legacy

7. Basic (0-0): Basic hopes to duplicate its strong finish to last season when it opens against Palo Verde in a battle of top 10 teams. Up next: Friday at Palo Verde

8. Green Valley (0-1): With games against Las Vegas, Arbor View and Palo Verde in the upcoming weeks, Green Valley can cement its status as a top 10 team in Las Vegas. Up next: Friday at Las Vegas High

9. Moapa Valley (1-0): The Pirates didn’t earn many style points for their opening-night win against Sierra Vista. Up next: Friday vs. Hurricane (Utah)

10. Canyon Springs (0-0): Canyon Springs’ tilt Friday against Cheyenne has the makings to be the most competitive game of the week. Up next: Friday at Cheyenne.
