The New Era kicks off

Las Vegas sports editor Ray Brewer can't decide whether UNLV is more likely to go 0-12 or 6-6, while sports writers Taylor Bern and Case Keefer debate the Rebels' chances to cover the spread against Northern Illinois and the rest of their early schedule.

Two weeks before its exhibition game, the Rebels are putting on a show in downtown Las Vegas. And they’re bringing their court with them.

UNLV announced that the men’s basketball team will host Runnin’ Rebel Madness on Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center. The event, which will be similar to UNLV’s 2011 appearance at the Fremont Street Experience, will feature a dunk contest, special videos, autograph sessions and introductions of the men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Other entertainment will be announced later, but the dunk contest will be the marquee event. Three incoming freshmen — Derrick Jones, Jalen Poyser and Stephen Zimmerman — have each finished first or second in dunk contests recently, and senior transfer guard Ike Nwamu can hold his own, too.

UNLV is brining Tarkanian Court downtown for the free event. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the event runs from 7-9 p.m.

A week earlier, on Oct. 15, the Rebels will hold a scrimmage at the Thomas & Mack Center. That event will also be free.
