A Las Vegas city councilman’s son facing charges in a string of armed robberies was arrested previously in January when Metro Police said they found heroin on him, according to an arrest report released today.

Shane Ross, the son of Las Vegas Mayor Pro Tem Steve Ross, told officers he had been using heroin for about seven years for chronic back pain because it was cheaper than prescription medication, police said. He said he had applied for insurance but had been denied several times, according to the report.

Officers were dispatched about 1:45 p.m. on Jan. 4 to the parking lot of the New York Bar and Grill, 6168 Spring Mountain Road, near Jones Boulevard, police said.

Someone called 911 to report a man doing drugs inside a red vehicle, and when officers arrived, Shane Ross stepped out of the vehicle, police said.

Officers found three small, pink bags containing about 2 grams of heroin inside a pack of cigarettes when they patted him down, police said.

Shane Ross, 27, admitted to officers that he had smoked heroin prior to their arrival, according to the report. The officers also found burned aluminum foil and several burned straws, indicative of heroin use, police said.

Shane Ross was charged with one count of felony drug possession, and the case is ongoing, according to court records. The arrest had not previously been reported in the media.

Shane Ross was arrested Friday in connection with a string of 10 armed robberies this month, according to police.

Steve Ross and his family have said Shane Ross suffers from addiction issues.
