Shelter receives donations after 1,000 pounds of dog food stolen

Four-pawed friends on special diets were left without food Saturday morning after at least one burglar took their 1,000-pound supply.

Staff from the nonprofit Noah's Animal House, which is partnered with Shade Tree women's shelter, arrived to find about 30 bags of dog food missing from a supply room, Noah's Animal House founder Staci Columbo Alonso said.

The "pretty organized" heist "moved quickly," Alonso said.

She estimates the supply would have lasted up to a few months.

The North Las Vegas shelter, founded in 2007, runs on donations and was built as an incentive for Shade Tree clients, Alonso said. Clients sometimes have a difficult time leaving their pets behind when seeking shelter from abusive relationships, she said.

Metro Police were called when staff became aware the food was gone, Alonso said. Call logs show the burglary call from Shade Tree, 1 W. Owens Ave., came in at 6:19 a.m.

Fortunately, Alonso said, the "Vegas community is so incredible," and donors have stepped up since the shelter announced the burglary.

To donate money or supplies in person, Alonso said, donors can visit the shelter on Owens, which is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day.
