The Las Vegas High basketball team needed a leader. The Wildcats needed that one player willing and capable to take the big shot at the end of the game.

They had five first-time starters this season and were looking for a new identity while trying to stay competitive in the Sunrise Region.

Junior wing Marquise Raybon has answered the call. Last week, he scored 25 points against Valley and had 30 against Arbor View in a pair of wins to earn the Sun’s Wingstop Player of the Week award.

“All of the guys look to me for scoring and rebounding,” he said. “I had to come through and show them what I’ve got.”

The 6-foot-5 Raybon played sparingly last year because Las Vegas had one of the most seasoned rosters in the city. This year, seeing his first significant varsity minutes, Raybon hasn’t disappointed. He’s averaging a team-best 14.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.

Against Arbor View, with the game not decided until the final minutes, he hit 14 of 15 free throws to give the Wildcats (11-15) the win. Then, against Valley in the “V Game” rivalry, he made 9 of 13 shots and was the game’s leading scorer. Some of the program’s graduates attended the Valley game, giving Raybon extra satisfaction for his solid performance.

“With all of the older guys coming to watch us play, we had to show our best and do our best,” Raybon said.

Las Vegas will need Raybon to deliver again next week. The playoffs start Wednesday with the Wildcats opening at top-seeded Coronado, the Southeast League champions who many feel are best team in the Sunrise.

But, with their team leader, the Wildcats have shown flashes of good play late in the season. Anything is possible.

Wingstop provides the player of the week a $50 gift card.
