Supreme Court reverses $70 million judgment in Las Vegas Sands case

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Supreme Court has reversed a $70 million judgment against Las Vegas Sands Corp. in connection with its efforts to secure a gambling license in Macau.

The court said there was insufficient evidence to justify the amount of the judgment in favor of Richard Suen and the Round Square Co., which helped Sands get the license from Chinese officials. But it indicated the $1 million Sands wanted to pay wasn’t viable, either.

This is the second time the state Supreme Court has reversed a District Court decision in the dispute between the parties over how much help Sands received in its efforts to secure a license.

The jury in an initial trial awarded $43.8 million to Suen and the company he partly owned. The court in 2010 sent that back to District Court on other issues.

The Supreme Court, in its decision posted Friday, ordered a new hearing in District Court to determine how much Sands Should pay.

Suen and two associates assisted Sands owner Sheldon Adelson in setting up meetings in Beijing with officials from the People’s Republic of China. The court said there was substantial evidence Suen provided benefits to Sands.
