Nearly 80 representatives from Southern Nevada communities, hospitals, nonprofits, religious organizations and government agencies met in Henderson today with the goal of providing homeless people with hope and opportunity.

The three-day Frequent User Supportive Housing Institute, conducted at the St. Rose Dominican Green Valley WomensCare and Outreach Center, focuses on offering homeless people with subsidized rental housing and services such as health care and counseling, said Charlene Flaherty, director of the Corporation for Supportive Housing.

“We need to end chronic homelessness,” Flaherty said. “Our hope is to really come out with concrete plans for housing and unit development and get homeless people connected with it.”

Among speakers at today’s opening conference speeches was Sister Dr. Judy Nelson, a clinical psychologist with Dignity Health-St. Rose Dominican Hospitals.

Most homeless clients at the hospitals lack “the skills, background and education to get a job,” Nelson said. “A lot of times they just can’t afford to pay rent.”
