On Tuesday night during a meet and greet at Born and Raised in Las Vegas, UNLV basketball coach Marvin Menzies told a bar full of supporters to expect some news soon about the remaining roster spots. They didn’t have to wait long.
This afternoon, the Rebels received commitments from three players: freshman Djordjije Sljivancanin from Ukraine, senior transfer Uche Ofoegbu from San Francisco and junior transfer Jordan Johnson from UW-Milwaukee.
Johnson, listed at 5-foot-9 and 175 pounds, follows coach Rob Jeter from the Panthers to the Rebels after Jeter was fired in March. Johnson averaged 12.5 points and 8.1 assists per game in his lone season in Milwaukee after starting his career at John Wood Community College in Illinois. He’ll sit out one season and have one year of eligibility remaining.
Ofoegbu, listed at 6-4 and 214 pounds, averaged 9.2 points and 4.6 rebounds last year. He shot 43.5 percent beyond the arc (30-of-69) and is eligible immediately for his final season.
Less is known about Sljivancanin, who’s listed at 6-foot-11 and spent the last year at IMG Academy in Florida. A former member of the U-18 Ukrainian National team, Sljivancanin recently visited Missouri and reportedly also had interest from Indiana and St. John’s.
The three commitments mean UNLV has only one or two scholarships remaining for the 2016-17 season.
