CARSON CITY — Certain marijuana convictions could be vacated under one of several criminal justice measures that have survived a deadline Tuesday in the Legislature.

Assembly members heard opposition and support testimony before they voted 27-15 along party lines to send Assembly Bill 259. to the Senate. Concerns were raised about the potential negative impact of reducing punishments for criminals, while support for the bill focused on helping to reverse consequences of the War on Drugs.

Lawmakers gave unanimous support to Assembly Bill 260, related to punishments for “johns” who seek to illegally purchase sex, and Assembly Bill 268, which deals with pre-release services for inmates.

A 30-12 vote passed Assembly Bill 268 on post-conviction DNA testing. Courts would be required to grant petitions from felons who request to pay for the analysis.

Bills need to pass a floor vote or secure exemptions to survive a deadline Tuesday.
