Canyon Springs High graduate Donnel Pumphrey didn’t have to wait long today to hear his named called in the NFL Draft.

The record-setting running back from San Diego State, who broke the NCAA record for rushing yards in his final collegiate game, was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles with the 26th pick of the fourth round. Rounds Nos. 4-6 were held today.

The Eagles made a trade to get into position to select the 5-foot-8, 172 pound Pumphrey.

“I am ready to show the world what I can do,” Pumphrey said in an interview on the Eagles web site. “I have heard that I am too small my whole life. That has kept me motivated. That is what I have been doing my whole life — proving people wrong.”

Many experts say Pumphrey can become the franchise’s third-down running back after Darren Sproles’ contract expires following the 2017 season. Both running back are underzied.

“It’s a blessing to be able to learn from the best of the best,” he said of Sproles. “I am excited to pick his brains about the game.”

Pumphrey’s 6,405 career rushing yards are a NCAA best. As a senior in 2016, he rushed for 2,133 yards and 17 touchdowns in being named a second-team All-American.

A few of his teammates from Canyon Springs were at his draft party.

“I am enjoying this moment with my friends and family,” Pumphrey said in an interview with the Eagles website. “It’s a blessing to experience it with all of them. We’re excited.”
