Letters to the Editor:

Rabbits aren’t throwaways

Wed, Aug 16, 2017 (2 a.m.)

Thank you for addressing the behavior and complex needs of companion rabbits (“What is Las Vegas doing about the burgeoning feral rabbit problem?” Aug. 7, lasvegassun.com.)

Animals are not toys — they need love and care to thrive. Parents often give rabbits to children on a whim, especially at Easter, only to abandon them as soon as the novelty wears off.

When that happens, issues like Las Vegas’ feral rabbit population are the result. Rabbits not left at a rescue facility or shelter are often dumped to fend for themselves on the streets, where they’re exposed to the elements; at risk of starvation and disease; and threatened by traffic, other animals, and cruel humans who shoot, stab and poison them.

Opening our hearts and homes to an animal companion is as rewarding as it is challenging, and it’s a lifetime commitment. When you or someone you love is ready to make it, please adopt from a shelter and help end animal homelessness.
