Letters to the Editor:

EPA cuts are appalling

Thu, Aug 17, 2017 (2 a.m.)

I spent over 40 years trying to invoke an appreciation for the fragility of our environment in my science students, so I find the proposed cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency budget very troubling.

What is more important than keeping our beautiful planet habitable for future generations? Even though 97 percent of climate scientists agree that man-made global warming is a fact, the new budget cuts funding for research on how to slow it.

It’s already too late to stop it. The proposed 2018 budget will cut $528 million from the 2017 budget. This is small change compared to overall federal funding but could seriously affect the health of our planet and all of its inhabitants. President Donald Trump and EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt are in the pocket of the fossil fuel industry, which cares more about its bottom line than clean air and water. I urge you to contact your legislators and ask them to fully fund the EPA.
