Arson suspected in Saturday condo fire

Sat, Feb 25, 2017 (12:33 p.m.)

Arson is suspected in a blaze that tore through a North Las Vegas condominium early today, displacing six people and causing about $250,00 in damage, according to fire officials.

Crews responded about 5:10 a.m. to the 3500 block of Mercury Street, south of Gowan Road, just east of Interstate 15, and encountered flames shooting from the two floors of one of seven condos within a shared complex that's conjoined by a roof.

The fire, which was mostly contained to the unoccupied unit where the fire is believed to originate, was contained in about 45 minutes, officials said. However, two other units sustained "some" damage and the six people who lived in them were displaced, a North Las Vegas Fire Department release said.

No one was injured and the incident remained under investigation, officials said. Further details have not been released.

The Clark County Fire Department and Las Vegas Fire & Rescue assisted, officials said. The Southern Nevada chapter of the American Red Cross was assisting the affected residents.
