Letter to the editor:

Remove politics from health care

Mon, Jul 17, 2017 (2 a.m.)

Just think of all the benefits we’d get with a single-payer health care system. And it doesn’t have to be Republican, Democrat, independent, right or left.

Everyone would have the same plan, same coverage and the same price, including local, state and federal government employees. Yes, Congress and the president too. No more time-wasting and discriminatory referrals, no more “What insurance do you have?” There would be no confusion over who is covered under what plan, no more problems with pre-existing conditions (almost everyone has one!). All medications would also be part of the one plan.

I know I would be willing to pay a higher price to get the best care for everyone. It is a matter of numbers — the more people you have on one plan, from infants to those of old age, the lower the cost of coverage for everyone. And it would all be in one national database with all your medical history. All doctors must accept the plan; no more searching for a doctor that takes your plan. There would be one payment a month.

This would also cover all military and their families with the best care possible. No more caps on costs for care or prescriptions, no exclusions for treatment. If you want chiropractic, acupuncture, brain surgery, it is all covered.

It is a win-win for everyone except the insurance companies. No more COBRA if you lose your job. No more waiting to be approved for care. What the doctor says goes.

Sure there will have to be some checks and balances so that no one, including doctors, can take advantage of and misuse the system or benefits. The government will still need to monitor drug prescription usage and doctors’ records to stop any abuses, but all in all it’s the best plan going.

Medical care should not be politicized. No gender exceptions — all persons are equal and get equal care.
