Letters to the Editor:

EPA needs protection

Sun, Jul 23, 2017 (2 a.m.)

The congressional budget needs to be reconsidered, especially given that the Environmental Protection Agency is on the chopping block. Currently, the budget slashes the EPA’s funding by $2.6 billion, which would have disastrous consequences not only for the state of Nevada, but also around the globe. Absent critical funding from the congressional budget means that climate change will accelerate due to the lack of resources for proper enforcement of environmental regulations on behalf of the EPA.

Air and water quality sustains life around the world. The United States needs to take the lead, not the backseat when it comes to environmental protection. The EPA is constantly strapped with new responsibilities but is stripped of resources necessary to accomplish them. We cannot allow the budget to pass or else the environment will deteriorate.

We have to have our voices reach those who hold positions of power, like Sen. Dean Heller. Only our represented officials have the ability to make tangible change on our behalf. We must not allow this budget to pass!
