Now that the “Hey Reb!” statue has been removed from UNLV and there is concern about using the school’s nickname, “Rebels,” as being offensive, I have a suggestion: Just call the team the “Las Vegans.”
This should be innocuous enough. As for the mascot, I agree with former UNLV quarterback Caleb Herring and say we should get rid of it altogether. It serves no required purpose, and no matter what you choose as a mascot, some group somewhere, sometime, will find it offensive — and we will be right back where we are today.
I say get rid of both.
