LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Americans are acting selfishly

Mon, Jun 29, 2020 (2 a.m.)

Anyone who wants to know about real sacrifice and discipline in the face of a relentless enemy should read “The Splendid and the Vile” by Erik Larson, which details how Londoners endured week after week of aerial bombing at the hands of the Nazis in World War II.

Their city in ruins around them, citizens sacrificed their lifestyle through rationing, nightly gatherings in shelters, treating neighbors like family, rebuilding together. Every night, more bombs came. London survived only by will.

Today, Americans face a relentless enemy in COVID-19, but are asked only to sacrifice by wearing masks and maintaining social distance and cleanliness. The fact that so many selfish, ignorant people think this is too much to ask is idiotic.

Every night, the body count rises. Can we unite to survive or are we too weak and stupid as a nation?
