- Like it was for UNLV, 2006-07 was a very good season for Southern Illinois, which earned the Missouri Valley Conference’s highest NCAA tournament seed (No. 4) since 1979. The Salukis defeated Holy Cross and Virginia Tech, then lost to Kansas to finish that season 29-7.

- Thanksgiving dinner is coming early for Italee Lucas this year. The North Carolina sophomore and Centennial High graduate will be in town this weekend to face the UNLV women’s basketball team on Sunday at Cox Pavilion. But first, Lucas and her Tar Heels teammates have a special trip to make.

- When I heard from an old racing pal that Michael Schumacher would be racing go-karts on the parking lot at the Rio this weekend, I told him I wasn’t interested, because I was covering Tiger Woods’ putt-putt match against Phil Mickelson. Then it was over to the Laughing Jackalope where U2 was playing a benefit for a school chum who had lost it all by hitting a hard 16. And after that, Pele said he’d give me a chance to get even on the foosball table.

- Sounds like an old Saturday morning cartoon, doesn’t it? When Steve “Chopper” Jones and freshmen Anthony Marshall and Justin Hawkins checked into the game in the second half against Nevada-Reno on Wednesday night, UNLV trailed by 12 points. When they went back to the end of the bench, the Rebels led by seven. Heavens to Murgatroyd, Snagglepuss!

- Locomotives coach Jim Fassel wanted his team to play a complete game Friday night in preparation for their appearance in the UFL Championship Game next week. Fassel got that and a lot more in Las Vegas’ 41-7 rout of the New York Sentinels. “What was most important to me was we didn’t come out and play a sloppy game,” Fassel said. “I was on them hard all week and they responded as they always have all year. - Despite having nearly a week off since their last meeting, the Las Vegas Wranglers still need more time to solve the Utah Grizzlies. The Wranglers' affinity for the penalty box and inability to stop the Grizzlies' power play combined for a nasty result Friday night as Utah shutout Las Vegas 4-0 in front of a near sell-out crowd of 9,304 fans at the E-Center.

- The Basic High football team isn’t supposed to be playing this late in the fall. This is when powers like Bishop Gorman, Palo Verde and Las Vegas High typically battle for gridiron bragging rights. But this is not your typical Basic squad. And this is definitely not a typical season for the Wolves.

- The Del Sol Dragons were angry. After what players called the toughest week of practice all year, the Dragons took the field Friday night and saw their opponents, the Liberty Patriots, dancing, hooting and hollering at them near midfield.

- Anu Solomon deserved some praise after this performance. So when Bishop Gorman coach Tony Sanchez spotted Solomon after his team’s 31-7 victory against Cimarron-Memorial in the Sunset Region Championship game, he called the freshman quarterback over and put his arm around him.
