So You Think You Can Dance
The NHL’s Stanley Cup arrived at the MGM Grand lobby this afternoon. Fresh from a Chicago Blackhawks celebration parade, the Stanley Cup was on display today until 7 p.m. and returns Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon and 4 to 7 p.m.
The trophy joins other NHL trophies on display at the MGM Grand lobby in celebration of Wednesday’s 2015 NHL Awards at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Hosted by actor and comedian Rob Riggle (“The Hangover,” “The Internship”), the annual awards features a performance from Daughtry, with a full concert after the NBC Sports Network and Canada Sports Net broadcast.
IRISH PRESS: Bartender John O’Donnell from Crush at MGM Grand was the headline hero of Irish newspapers today because he hosted UFC warrior Conor McGregor for his matchup against Brazilian featherweight Jose Aldo on July 11 at Grand Garden Arena.
Known as “The Notorious” Conor , the former Cage Warriors featherweight and lightweight champion was with his girlfriend, friends and training camp partners at Crush on Sunday night. John mixed up drinks for the group who snacked on small-plate items. Photos of John and Conor dominated the Irish press, who proclaimed that a large Irish contingent will travel here for the fight.
Said Conor: “The Irish will flock in, and I don’t think the people in this city know what they’re in for — it will be phenomenal and electric. Everyone who gets off that plane from Ireland will be ready to fight.” Conor added of his opponent, “Fear has a strong stench, and he is reeking of it. I simply see fear.”
TERRY’S LOSS: Our condolences to Mirage headliner Terry Fator on the death of his sister Debi, who suffered chronic pain battling arthritis.
Debi recently moved from Dallas to Terry’s Las Vegas home, but he was away over the weekend at East Coast appearances and raced back here the moment he was informed of the sad news. He’s in our thoughts and prayers.
It’s difficult to believe that just one week ago, Debi introduced me to Terry’s new girlfriend, Angie Fiore, at Terry’s 50th birthday party.
CAN YOU DANCE? Identities of contestants for Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” from auditions in April at Westgate Las Vegas were revealed on tonight’s show.
Producer Nigel Lythgoe and fellow judges Paula Abdul and Jason Derulo, with mentors Twitch Boss and Travis Wall, auditioned dozens of dancers while at Westgate.
Our thanks to Richard Corey for his video of my interviews with them posted on YouTube.
ELEVATOR NIGHTCLUB: The 2015 Electric Daisy Carnival crashed into Las Vegas over the weekend, and as a preview to the 72-hour party, unsuspecting guests at MGM Grand were confronted with an elevator that had been turned into a “vertical nightclub” featuring Krewella by our creative Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
The Krewellavator featured a turntable that also served as laser show accompanied by performances of the duo’s top singles including “Alive.” One of the elevator’s stops added Hakkasan dancers spinning glow sticks.
Sisters Jahan Yousaf and Yasmine Yousaf of Krewella said, “Raging in an elevator with strangers in the middle of the day in Las Vegas was proof of how uninhibited people are in the Party Capital of the World!”
ROBBING BANKS: Crooner Brian Evans has written a new novel, “The Funny Robbers,” which was launched on Kindle over the weekend and as of next week paperback. The story is the fictional tale of Carrot Top and three other zany comics robbing banks across the country.
Brian’s book was co-written with Carrot Top tour manager Dan O’Leary. Carrot Top gave the duo permission to use his name in the fictional comedy, which is being pursued as a movie. I started reading it and couldn’t put it down. I got as far as Chapter 26 in hysterics with the absurd plot and scenarios before putting it down from laughing too much.
I’ll resume tonight. Carrot Top co-stars in Brian’s new music video “Creature at the Bates Motel,” which will see a push for Halloween.
FISH OUT OF WATER: The Travel Channel is getting closer to naming its next “Travel Channel Star,” and it could be Las Vegas entertainer Frankie Moreno’s younger brother Ricky Moreno. The next round of the competition posted online today and pits the Top Five contestants whittled down from 2,000 contestants in new videos produced by the network.
The winner will be revealed in a one-hour special hosted by “Trip Flip” host Bert Kreischer recapping audition videos and judges critiques on Monday, Sept. 7, at 8 p.m. In each of the Top Five contestants’ webisodes, they must showcase their personality, expertise and unique perspective while their travel specialty is put to the test.
Fans can vote for their favorite video on the “Travel Channel Star” webpage or by using #travelchannelstar on Twitter until Friday. But before a winner can be crowned, only two can advance to the final round. The pair will be revealed on TravelChannel.com on Monday, July 6, and fans can watch the final two complete an identical challenge and receive advice from a surprise mentor on Monday, Aug. 3.
JUGGLING VENUES: Headliner juggler Jeff Civillico has begun his 12-week summer run at Bugsy’s Cabaret in Flamingo — through Sunday, Sept. 6, — with two shows daily before his return to the Linq Hotel after Labor Day Weekend.
Jeff explained: “Why the change? The Linq Theater is going dark for an overhaul July into August, which long term will be fantastic for me and my show, but short term puts a bit of a wrinkle into my summer schedule. As an all-ages show, the summer is my busy season, so I’ve opted for an interrupted summer run at an alternative location right next door. It’ll be fun to switch it up for summer.”
The theater is being redesigned for the August arrival of “America’s Got Talent” winner illusionist Mat Franco, who starts his residency there in August.
Tonight’s Tips and Tomorrow’s Teases were posted earlier today.
