Heat taking its toll

Fri, Feb 29, 2008 (1:12 p.m.)

Unseasonably warm temperatures approaching 80 degrees have sent the track temperature skyrocketing for today’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice session at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

At least five drivers had trouble negotiating the slick track during the first hour of the 90-minute practice for Sunday’s UAW-Dodge 400. The cars of Juan Pablo Montoya, Bobby Labonte and Kasey Kahne suffered slight to moderate damage when they spun and made contact with the wall.

Patrick Carpentier and Reed Sorenson both spun coming out of Turn 4 and slid through the infield grass but managed to keep their cars off the wall.

Qualifying for the UAW-Dodge 400 will begin at 3:40 p.m. (PST).
