What could “Humpy” Wheeler bring to NASCAR?

Fri, May 23, 2008 (8:50 a.m.)

Could former Lowes’s Motor Speedway President “Humpy” Wheeler soon be working for NASCAR? I would guess that NASCAR would seriously consider making Wheeler part of its team given the unique level of creativity he brings to promotion and the wealth of knowledge he has as a result of working in the sport for so many years. During a news conference on Wednesday, Wheeler mentioned that he would be available to NASCAR if it wants him.

In addition to his P.T. Barnum-like talents, Wheeler would bring another valuable asset to NASCAR’s camp: His extensive knowledge of the inner workings of Speedway Motorsports Inc., which comes from having been CEO of that company. With Wheeler, NASCAR would have an open window to the mechanics of Bruton Smith’s empire. And even though NASCAR works with SMI to keep the wheels of the sport well lubricated, I would imagine that NASCAR could benefit from knowing how the other dominant player in the sport thinks and operates.
