UPDATE: Pedestrian killed in collision identified

Mon, Jun 9, 2008 (3:34 p.m.)

(First posted at 6:51 a.m.) Metro police this afternoon identified a pedestrian who was struck by two cars late Sunday night near University Medical Center in Las Vegas.

The Clark County Coroner's office has identified the pedestrian as Michael Francis Steinberg, 58. He has no known address, according to a spokeswoman in the coroner's office.

The accident occurred at 11:05 p.m. Sunday on Charleston Boulevard, 88 feet west of Westwood Drive, police said.

Evidence at the scene and statements of witnesses indicate that Steinberg was walking on the south side of Charleston and darted into the roadway outside of a marked crosswalk, according to police.

The driver of 1996 Saturn, Daniel Santana-Bastida, 25, Las Vegas, who was driving west on Charleston was unable to stop and struck the pedestrian, police said. The pedestrian was then struck by a 1993 Nissan Sentra that was behind the Saturn also traveling west, driven by Mia Camarote, 19, Las Vegas, police reported.

Police said evidence suggests the accident was caused by pedestrian error, jaywalking, but officers are continuing to investigate. Steinberg was pronounced dead at the scene.

The death is the 55th traffic fatality police have investigated this year in the city.
