Governor to meet with quake scientists

Mon, Apr 28, 2008 (5:24 p.m.)

Gov. Jim Gibbons plans to meet with University of Nevada, Reno scientists as well as local and state emergency management officials at 2 p.m. Tuesday to review the ongoing earthquake swarm in the Mogul area of northwestern Nevada.

The officials will also review government emergency response plans and the importance of individual emergency preparedness for northern Nevada residents.

Since Feb. 28 the area near Mogul and Verdi, northwest of Reno, has experienced a swarm of earthquakes and aftershocks. Scientists say that the swarm is unusual because smaller quakes have been followed by larger temblors. In most cases a large quake is followed by smaller shakers.

The largest quake recorded in the swarm to date occurred at 11:40 p.m. Friday with a magnitude 4.7, according to the University of Nevada, Reno seismology laboratory.
