Lawmakers spar over plans to lower gas prices

WASHINGTON -- Senate Republicans' solution to $4 gas is being summed up in a talking point that seemed to be everywhere today -- in senators' speeches and in green stickers being slapped on lapels and BlackBerrys.

"Find More, Use Less," the slogan goes.

Republicans are trying to get traction on their energy plan, which calls for a combination of drilling and conservation. Republican Sen. John Ensign said Congress and President Bush must act together "as the trauma team" to lower gas prices. "If we just put a Band-Aid on it," as he said the Democratic plan would do, "this patient is going to be in serious trouble."

But Democrats prefer to target oil market speculators, believing they are driving up prices at the pump. Democrats say drilling more is not the answer, and they point to record oil company profits since the Bush administration took office.

Taking stock of the stickers on Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid suggested a different approach for Republicans: "What they should do is act more, and talk less."
