If Woodbury can’t run, others stand ready

Fri, May 16, 2008 (5:25 p.m.)

With Clark County Commissioner Bruce Woodbury's political future uncertain, a few candidates filed to replace him today, just in case he can't run again.

University Regent Steve Sisolak, a Democrat, filed, as did Brian Scroggins, a former Clark County Republican Party chairman and a 2006 candidate for secretary of state.

"Unequivocally, I'm not running against Bruce Woodbury," Scroggins said. "I’m just here to protect the seat."

Similarly, Sisolak said: "I'm a big fan of Bruce Woodbury." He, too, cited the uncertainty of whether term limits would knock Woodbury off the ballot as the reason he filed.

"If the secretary of state and AG say he can’t run, and a court upholds that, there would be a huge void," he said. "I could fill that void."

Sisolak has served 10 years as a regent.

Although today is the last day to file for office, candidates have until May 28 to pull their names off the ballot.

It's unclear whether the legal wrangling will be over by then.
