Tourism in the west has largely been confined to posh resorts that provide all of the comforts and amenities of, well, someone's home.

But in an unprecedented move, and perhaps a nod to the lagging economy not just in Las Vegas, but all across the country, western tourism officials have been selling their outdoor treasures. In Nevada, Great Basin National Park and Death Valley have been marketed to visitors that frequent such hot west spots as San Francisco, Anaheim, Calif. and Las Vegas.
